A student can now produce a competent university essay without being competent at writing it. That is not primarily an academic-integrity problem. It is a problem for the degree itself.
Universities have always joined two functions together: they educate a person, then issue evidence that the person learned. Generative AI has begun to prise those functions apart. It has also made information, explanation and plausible professional output extraordinarily cheap — which changes the comparison for an institution asking a substantial financial commitment while returning feedback in fifteen working days.
So the chapter asks two questions. What is the university adding, once content is nearly free? And if the same technology can produce the work through which students demonstrate what they have learned, what does the credential now prove? AI did not create either question. It removed the soft lighting.
